The HealthMap system was alerted to a media report of Cholera cases in Ethiopia. The Ethiopian Public Health Institute confirmed 525 cases and 16 deaths due to infection with Cholera. The cases occurred in Oromia, Amhara and Tigray regions and Addis Ababa city. The RFI was sent on 12 June 2019 at 10:31AM EST.
A RFI response was received on 3 July 2019 at 9:43AM that provided a press release from the Ethiopian Public Health Institute that was released the day prior. Updated case counts revealed 871 confirmed cases in five regional states, including Oromia, Amhara, Afar, Somali and Tigray, and two city administrations, Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa. The case breakdown includes 360 cases in Oromia, 202 in Amhara, 131 in Afar, 33 in Somali, 19 in Tigray, 125 in Addis Ababa and 1 in Dire Dawa. Seventeen cases have died, of which 14 are from Amhara regional state. A sample of laboratory diagnostics confirmed that 32 cases were caused by Vibrio cholerae. This outbreak was confirmed by the EpiCore system.
